It's essential that your visitors can navigate around your web site with no problems. Navigation should be clear and easy to understand. The visitors should be able to navigate with minimum effort. Below you will find a checklists that will help you while you are designing your (Or other peoples) site.
1) Keep it Consistent - Navigation should appear the same on every web page of your site. If you don't they will become confused and frustrated.
2) Site Search - Having a site search is very useful to any site, but especially to large content based sites.
3) Add ALT Tags - All of your buttons should have the ALT tag on them.
4) Always Link Home - On every page you should link back to the homepage and the homepage should be the first link in the navigation.
5) Don't use Dynamic Menus - Not all visitors can use Flash or Java Script. Also keep it mind that most internet users have dial up and not high speed.
6) Choose Colors Wisely - Don't make your buttons difficult to view, example black text on a black background. It should be easy to scan.
7) Choose your Fonts Carefully - Visitors should never have to download fonts just to view your navigation, the fonts should be standard.
8) Site Map - Lost visitors will use it to find their way around a site. A site map should be text based and listed alphabetically.
