Webmasters Tips - Content & Copywriting Tips

Using "Click Here" as Link Text

Try to use brief but meaningful link text when asking the end-user or website visitor to take an action. Instead of repeating "click here" over and over again within your pages, try to provide some explanation of what the site is, or what the visitor will find when they click through. Simply stated, try to not use a verb phrase as it is against many of the rules for good web copywriting.

Back Office Webcraft.ws - #63 - Get Your Own Custom 404 Page:

Construction Promotion Training Back Office
Submit your website information to a 1000 search engines and directories.

The plain 404 error web page doesn't link back to your site and causes you to lose visitors.

If you have a domain name, you should be able to create a custom 404 error page, most web host will allow you to setup a 404 page for no extra cost and with little work on your part.

Custom error pages can help keep the visitors at your site or keep them there longer and it can also help you find dead links on your site because the visitors will report them to you more often and you can veiw your logs.

On some web host you can turn it on without doing much (besides designing it), but other web host may require a little more work than that. But don't get scared, it's not hard as you may think. If you are not sure if you have permission to do this, make sure you ask your web host.

Go to the main directory of your web site through FTP and find a file named .htaccess. After you find it open the file and edit it. If you can't find one just create a file named .htaccess. Add the following to it:

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.here-your-site.com/404_page.html

If you do find the .htaccess file in your main directory look for a piece of code that looks like the code above. If you can't find it add the line of code to it, but if you do find it just change the URL to the correct web page that your 404 page is at. Set the permissions to CHMOD 644. Not all web host require you to set the CHMOD, if your not sure ask your web host.

You should now see your own 404 page, now design it the way that you see fit.
