The Internet is a wonderful medium for business. • Don't have the mind-set that you're on the project just to make money. Making money from a web site should be balanced. If people know you are on the hard-sell from the outset, you'll lose credibility and make little. Whilst your site may be service-orientated, find ways to provide free, valuable content and worthwhile resources in addition to your service.
• Think hard how you can have real content that is of high value to your target market. The Internet is junked already, be different and try to visualize things from your visitors eyes.
• Aim to make your site the best it can be, not the biggest.
• Research sites that offer something on your web site topic and think, "how can I make this better and add value to my audience". Expand on good ideas and content that others offer in your chosen area.
• If competition is hot (lots of sites offering what you wanted), think how you can diversify in another area from this. Find a niche outside of the mainstream topic.
• Information is the most sought-after and profitable product on the Internet.
• Making money on the Internet is not as easy as people will have you believe. Research your web site topic of choice judiciously, find ways to provide real value to your visitors and the odds will swing heavily in your favor of success!
