Thoughts on Improving an Industry: Addressing a Company's Weaknesses, part two

How can a company help the public understand its products as they are? First, it must consider its strengths and weaknesses. Avoid any "just like _" statements. Find new ways to describe a product so that it will no longer be mistaken for its competition. Boast of every advantage and appealing aspect. Do not ignore the weaknesses of a product. Either obfuscate them or think of ways to help the public understand why the weaknesses exist, and why they should think of the weaknesses as unimportant.

How can a company help the public understand that its customers are normal individuals with a variety of needs and interests? Consider interviews and endorsements. Ask people why they use a product, and even if the answer is negative, try addressing concerns. Finally, remember that psychology plays a role in advertising, so avoid exploiting it, but take advantage of it.

Submit your website information to a 1000 search engines and directories.

If you are generating e-mail from your website, there are a few attributes for the "mailto" function that can help you filter mail more effectively.

Have a look at the following examples, but be sure to protect yourself from spam spiders as noted below.

Standard Mailto: <a href="mailto:you@yoursite.com">
Send Mail</a>

Now have a look at these additional paramaters you can apply:

Add a Subject: <a href="mailto:you@yoursite.com?
subject=Newsletter%20Feedback">Newsletter Feedback</a>

Add a Message: <a href="mailto:you@yoursite.com?
subject=Newsletter%20Feedback
&body=Your%20Message%20Here">Newsletter Feedback</a>

CC Another Recipient: <a href="mailto:you@yoursite.com?
subject=Newsletter%20Feedback& cc=newsletter@yoursite.com">Newsletter Feedback</a>

BCC Another Recipient: <a href="mailto:you@yoursite.com?subject=Newsletter%20Feedback&
cc=newsletter@yoursite.com
&bcc=webmaster@yoursite.com">Newsletter Feedback</a>

Note that our extra paramaters
begin with a "?" for the first one, then use a "&" for subsequent ones. Also note that we use "%20" to designate a space.

With any of the above mailto options, you should always mask your code to prevent spam spiders from capturing your email addresses. Here's a simple, but effective method to chop up your address and hide it from spiders:

<a href="#" onmouseover="this.href='mai' + 'lto:' + 'you' + '@' + 'yoursite.com'">Send Mail</a>
